My closet is something that used to just get out of control. I have worked hard to edit my wardrobe and organize what I have so that I get the most out of my clothes. Today, I wanted to share with you some of my closet organization tips that have made the most difference in keeping things organized:
#1. Take ALL items out of your closet. I mean everything. Carefully decide these 3 things on each item you decide to put back in your closet:
- Have you worn it in the last year?
- Does it fit?
- Things that no longer mesh with your personal style
#2. When you place the items back in your closet turn all of the hangers backwards. After you wear the item place back in your closet with the hanger the right way. After one year toss everything with the hanger still in the opposite direction. This has been my very favorite tip I’ve come across over the last few years. It helps me figure out, quickly, what I do and don’t wear.
#3 – Place like items together. I tried for awhile to organize by color. That made my closet by far prettier…however, I would forget what I had because I wouldn’t remember to look in the black section for that one blouse. I prefer to categorize by sleeve length. It helps me wear more of what I have instead of the same pieces over and over.
#5 – Rotate items. If you don’t have a lot of space in your closet change things out seasonally. Put your summer dresses, shorts, sandals, etc in totes to make room for your fall and winter items.
#6 – Repeat the process every 6 months – 1 year.
