We are in the process of redecorating our master bedroom. So, while in Dallas a couple of weeks ago we popped into Ikea to pick up two of the Rast dressers to use as our nightstands. They come in raw wood and I knew I either wanted to perform a little DIY Ikea Rast Hack by staining or painting them and adding new hardware.

We got home and I got to work. I ended up using the Minwax Classic Gray stain and finishing them off with Annie Sloan Dark Wax. I wanted it to resemble barnwood.

I painted on a thin layer of the Minwax stain and then quickly wiped it away with a dry towel.

The results were still a little too light for me. I wanted more of a rustic wood look. So, I applied a layer of the Annie Sloan dark wax.

Lauren - Okay, do you think a proclaimed non DIY’er could do this? I LOVE it!
Where are the knobs from?
Colleen - I love this, Jenny! Great work!
Jenny Collier - I am totally a non-DIYer. It was so simple…I promise!
Jenny Collier - Thank you so much!
Bevin - Very smart hack! Like how it takes its cue from the natural wood grain.
So many Rast hacks obliterate the natural wood grain on the assumption that it couldn’t possibly look good enough unless it was obscured by opaque paint.
You proved them wrong. With just the right stains, you managed to elevate it above the “unpainted furniture” level. The “barn wood” concept was terrific. Gratifying to see you pull it off.
Thanks for sharing this!
