With the next holiday being Valentine’s Day I thought I would share with you a fun heart bokeh tutorial. Can you imagine the cute customized Valentine’s that could be made with this?

Supplies:
- Black Cardstock or Construction Paper
- Multiple Lights such as Christmas lights
Directions:
Trace the top of the lens on your black cardstock and then cut it out. Then cut a long strip to wrap around the width of the lens.

Cut a heart out of the center of the circle paper (I used nail scissors to do this).
Then tape your two pieces together over your lens. You’ll want to make sure that they are evenly matched and taped well as you want to avoid light leaking in any other place other than through the heart.

You’ll want to make sure your aperture is wide open (since I was using a 50mm 1.2 lens my aperture was set to 1.2). At first, I was too close to the lights and they did not appear heart shaped…then I learned the trick. The lights need to be completely out of focus for them to appear heart shaped.
I had to keep moving my subject further and further away from the lights for it to appear so. The end result? Fun heart shaped lights!
