Family Pictures Style Guide

It’s time to start planning this year’s family pictures.  Why is it so tough to plan your family’s outfits?  I’m hoping to make it easier by giving you some tips in this family pictures style guide.

And, since I own a clothing store I thought I would base this year’s guide around one of our favorite looks.

Family Photo Style Inspiration

Mom:  Asher Top, Fur Vest (Similar Here), Sutton Jeans, Crew Necklace

Dad:  Plaid Shirt, Jeans, Shoes

Boy:  Sweater, Puffer Vest, Jeans, Shoes

Girl:  Dress, Boots

My number one tip is find one entire outfit first that you want to base the rest of yours off of.  In this case it was my outfit (more often than not in our own family pictures it’s my daughters).  I pulled colors out of that and started searching for the girls.  I find this to be easiest because most boy’s & men’s clothes tend to be the simplest of all of the outfits.

Keep in mind you don’t want to be too matchy.  Stick to 2-3 colors and play off of those.  Don’t forget to add in layers and texture.  Those things make the photograph more interesting.

Great places to search for children’s clothes are Gap, Old Navy, J Crew, Zara, H&M, Cotton On Kids, and Crazy 8.

And finally keep the colors and decor of your home in mind.  I know I will want to display prints in my home which is very neutral.  So, I’m not likely to dress my family in a multitude of colors.

  • Debbie - This post was great! It is always hard for me to find coordinating outfits for my family. I love the men’s shirt, but the link did not work. Do you know where it is from?
